Interactive Displays in the Classroom
In 1990, the World Wide Web became available to students in schools. Since then, education and classrooms have changed drastically because of technology’s constant evolution. Technology has the potential to enhance the learning environment and provide new learning opportunities that simply weren’t possible before.
One exciting advancement has been the introduction of interactive displays in the classroom. Interactive displays are sometimes referred to as interactive whiteboards, interactive boards, smart boards, digital whiteboards, and smart whiteboards. They allow teachers and students to directly interact with class material through touch interfaces. These interactive displays can increase collaboration and productivity in classrooms plus provide many other benefits. Let’s explore some of them!
1. Increases Student Engagement & Interest
Interactive whiteboards have the potential to increase student interest, engagement, and focus. They can increase student engagement for a few different reasons. First, today’s students are very interested in technology, so using an interactive display in the classroom can help grab the students’ attention. Plus, the ability to gamify content can make the learning process more fun, which can help increase interest and focus.
Another way it helps increase student engagement is through the students’ ability to interact with the displays, which can foster collaboration between learners. They can experience a lesson through touching, drawing, or writing on the board. This gives students a chance to become participants, and it can lead to better focus and material retention.
2. Easy to Use
An additional benefit of interactive displays is that they are very easy to use and clean, unlike traditional whiteboards and chalk boards which can be messy and difficult to keep clean. Teachers don’t need markers, chalk, or erasers. Plus, they require very little maintenance.
3. Presentations Can Be Recorded
Another benefit of interactive whiteboards is that presentations can be recorded. This means that students can view lessons, even when the class is over. This can be helpful for students that miss a class, plus it gives students the opportunity to re-watch lessons if they need a refresher or more clarification on a certain topic.
4. Provides Teachers with Endless Resources
Because interactive displays are connected to the internet, they give teachers access to tons of online information and resources, including content, videos, charts, graphs, maps, photos, illustrations, and other educational tools. Plus, educators have the ability to put together fun presentations, charts, games, and other resources needed to enhance their lessons. Interactive whiteboards offer teachers both functionality and flexibility within the classroom.
5. Accommodates Various Learning Styles
We all know that students learn in different ways, but you may not have known that interactive whiteboards can help teachers meet various learning styles. This is because interactive displays have the ability to use audio, video, text, and images. Students can learn by hearing, seeing, and interacting with the board through touch.
6. Allows for the Integration of Other Technologies
Another benefit of interactive displays is that they allow for the integration of other technologies to help enhance instruction. Teachers can easily connect their computers, microscopes, video cameras, and digital cameras to help with their lessons.
